Decorating Your Teens Bedroom

!±8± Decorating Your Teens Bedroom

When your kid gets to be a teenager, that little kids furniture and bedroom décor just won't do. Your teen wants a cool new look, and here's how you can get it.

First of all, don't toss out that old bedroom furniture yet. Unless the furniture is totally banged up and broken, you may be able to give it a cool new look with some paint and new knobs. Before you start on that, however, you need to figure out the theme of your teen bedroom design.

Todays hot new looks are centered around retro, modern or "cool" designs. Teens actually have pretty good design sense (probably from watching so much TV!) and you can design a really neat room just by adding some new accents. Of course, your teen may need a new desk to do their home work at if the old one no longer works but you can give the old furniture a new look as mentioned above.

Luckily, you don't have to spend a lot on accents for your teenagers room. Most of the discount department stores like Target offer hip furnishings and accents at discount prices. You can buy inexpensive shelves, or build them yourself, and use it for them to put all their stuff that might normally be thrown on the floor. This will help the room look neat and reduce the clutter.

You can give your teens bedroom a fun but sophisticated look by painting the room in a "cool" color like chocolate, sage or purple and using accents to as focal points. A flokati or rag rug will lend a sophisticated air and you can even put the down as area rugs on top of wall to wall carpeting to give the floor a whole new look. Replace the kids ruffled or theme curtains with tab topped curtains in a denim or canvas for a more adult look.

Bedding for you teen can be plain, or funky - whatever goes with the room. Depending on your teens taste, a neutral colored bed set with nicely textured fabrics like silks or a velvet duvet can add interest with out being too flashy. Or if you want to make the bed a focal point, how about an animal print set or something in bright colors like hot pink and orange?

Accents are where you add interest and give the room personality. Some fun accents include chairs shaped like a giant shoe, faux fur covered lamps in wild colors, bean bag chairs of all types, phones in all shapes and sizes, funky accent pillows, rugs and wall art.

Ten Tips For Decorating a Small Studio Apartment

!±8± Ten Tips For Decorating a Small Studio Apartment

Studio apartments can be difficult to decorate because everything is basically all in one big (or not so big) room. Sometimes this small space has to accommodate several different activities: sleeping, entertaining, cooking and an office area.

Here are ten tips for decorating a small studio apartment:

1. Provide enough storage. Try to find furnishings for your apartment that will do "double duty." You can even find chairs and ottomans that have storage areas inside of them. Just lift up the top and there you will find space for blankets, pillows or other items.

2. Use containers to hide clutter. Buy wicker baskets or old steamer trunks to store out-of-season clothing, linens and towels. They will look great and contain all of those small items that make a room look cluttered.

3. Use mirrors to reflect the light. A large mirror or several small mirrors placed strategically can make a small space feel lighter and larger. If you like a more modern style of decorating, furniture and tables with metal or glass can visually expand the space.

4. Don't block the light. Covering every window with blinds and draperies can make a small room feel dark and crowded. Leave windows bare or only cover with sheer draperies to let the light shine through. Light always makes a space seem larger.

5. Place furniture in "rooms." Try to create specific areas for specific activities. Put a bed and dresser in one area for the bedroom and a sofa and coffee table in another area. Having your apartment furnishings put any-old-way can make it cluttered and uninviting. You might have to leave out the bed and use a sleeper sofa if your apartment is super-small.

6. Create a focus. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, accentuate it. Even if you don't have a natural focal point, create one. Painting just one wall a different color will draw the attention into the room an make it seem bigger. Put a large credenza or entertainment center on that wall and decorate it with beautiful accessories.

7. Use dividers for larger apartments. You can find beautiful dividers in both thrift shops and high end furniture stores. Use them to enclose various areas of your space. I saw an episode on HGTV where they used four beautiful wooden dividers to make a separate bedroom. It not only provided a private sleeping area, but also created another "wall" on which to place furniture.

8. Keep clutter at bay. When you have a small area, clutter is not an option. Too many knick-knacks and too much furniture crowds everything together too much. Keep your necessary items, such as extra bed linens put away in a dresser or wicker baskets. Kitchen counters should be kept clean with everything in the cupboards...if possible.

9. Another trick for a small space is to buy furniture with legs and that are higher off of the floor. Your eye will look "under" these pieces of furniture and add visual space. Furniture that is blocky and low to the ground makes a room appear more crowded.

10. Paint with lighter colors. You don't have to use white, but using paint colors that are lighter in color expands a space more than dark colors.

Decorating a studio apartment can be a challenging task, but using the above tips can help you get started in the right direction.

Decorating on the Cheap

!±8± Decorating on the Cheap

Are you stuck in a rut, living with the same old look you've had for the past umpteen years? Does your room lack the style, excitement and flair you desire? If you'd like to change the look and ambiance of your room but feel that it would be too cost prohibitive; here are some ideas that can help.

First, assess the purpose you wish for the room and decide what furnishings and accessories are needed to best accomplish that designation. Let's say, for instance, that we're updating a family room (T.V.room). Obviously, the number one priority for the room would be a suitable television. Hopefully, that's something you already own because T.V.'s are a big ticket item and the purchase of a nice one can blow the budget in a hurry. Decide what other items would best compliment this room.

One of the most effective and least expensive ways to change a room is paint. Paint is affordable and can easily set the kind of backdrop from which you can begin to make other changes, starting with the floor covering. This is another area where a small amount of investment can bring about a huge change. Whether you presently have hard surface flooring (tile, wood, cement, etc.) or wall to wall carpeting, either look can be updated with the addition of terrific area rugs. We all know that beautiful rugs can cost into the thousands of dollars, but grreat looking ones can also be purchased at chain stores like Pier I, Ikea, even T.J. Maxx, very inexpensively. In one family room that I recently updated, I added a 0.00 zebra print rug which completely changed the look and feel of the room. It instantly changed the dull, lifeless feel of the room to one that was more interesting and earthy, and also provided a great direction for me to go with the other accessories that I later added.

With the paint color and floor coverings in place, it's time to start acquiring what I call the "personality pieces for your room; throw pillows, green plants, pottery and wall decor. Each of these items can be found at very reasonable prices and will add immeasurable charm and personality to your room. Take note, also, of pieces currently taking up space in other areas of your home that might find a much more suitable home in your "new" room. For instance, a comfortable but neglected old chair can take on new life with a zesty throw draped across the back along with one or two eye-catching throw pillows.

A word about green plants. In my opinion, green plants are essential part of a beautiful and livable room, but if you absolutely can't be bothered with the worry of their care; nice silk plants are an acceptable substitute. Just stay away from the really cheap and fake looking ones. Decent ones can be found at affordable prices at many stores.

Pottery can be the jewel in a room. You can find inexpensive pieces at some of the chain stores mentioned earlier which can add warmth and energy to an area that is hard to achieve in any other way. Mirrors are another terrific choice when accessorizing. They visually expand space and reflect light and can cost very little.

Now that you have all the necessary ingredients for your room; be willing to experiment. Move the furnishings around and change the pillows and wall decor until you're satisfied. You'll know when you finally get it just right. What a joy it is to step into a room that is perfect for it's intended use and that looks terrific in the process. And just think, you don't have to pay a decorator big bucks to achieve this look, you can do it yourself. Happy Decorating!
